Specialty news: Latest trainee recruitment figures offer mixed picture

The latest specialty recruitment round, covering post-foundation juniors, starting training positions this month, reveals continued gaps in stretched specialties.

Health Education England reported that while in absolute terms numbers increased, unfilled posts in psychiatry and general practice still lingered around the one in five mark – at 19 per cent and 17 per cent respectively – while paediatrics showed a slight decline with 7 per cent of posts unfilled.

Emergency medicine continued to report a 99 per cent fill rate, including some of the 75 additional posts a year funded until 2017 through a £50 million HEE programme to fill historical shortfalls.

HEE Chief Executive Professor Ian Cumming maintained that the recruitment data showed “medical training is still an attractive career of choice.”
