Higher Clinical Excellence Awards slashed in number nationally

Hospitaldr.co.uk reports that the number of clinical excellence awards handed out nationally has been halved in the 2010 round. Only 317 national awards have been given to senior doctors in England and Wales in 2010 in comparison to 601 in 2009. Read more >

HUTTON TO LEAD PENSIONS INQUIRY

The Government has appointed former Labour MP and Health Secretary John now Lord Hutton to lead the independent public services pensions commission. This will carry out a fundamental structural review of public service pension provision by the Budget of 2011. It will produce an interim report by the end of September 2010 ahead of the spending review in the autumn. Read more >

Working Time Directive: the saga continues!

The Temple report “Time for Training”, a review of the effect of the European Working Time Directive (EWTD) on the quality of Medical training, was published in June. In August the Government ordered a review of European restrictions over doctors’ working hours, largely in response to a national survey conducted by the Royal College of Surgeons. This found that 80% of the 980 NHS surgeons and surgical trainees surveyed said care had worsened since the European Working Time Directive started last August. Read more >

As a nationally recognised specialist nomination body the HCSA will again consider applications from members wishing to apply for national Clinical Excellence Awards. Applications should be sent electronically to conspec@hcsa.com to be received by midnight on 31 October 2010. As in previous years significant weight will be attached to those applications which demonstrate active involvement and support to the work of the Association. Read more >
